Pink Eye

Thinking Man on Couch

What to Do with Pink Eye
Also known as conjunctivitis, pink eye is a medical condition wherein the inner membranes of the eyelid called the conjunctiva and the outermost layer of the eyes gets inflamed. There are several reasons why this condition occurs, and these include infection, exposure to contaminants, allergic reactions, or a Chlamydia infection.

Is Pink Eye A Cause for Concern?
While some form of conjunctivitis is contagious, they often

resolve after a week or two; thus heavy treatment is not necessary.  So, what should you do if you suspect yourself having conjunctivitis? It depends on the cause of conjunctivitis.

For instance, if it is caused by an allergic reaction, find the source of allergens and find a way to get rid of them. Allergens that can cause this condition include animal dander, dust, and pollen. By removing the source of allergens, you also reduce the risk of getting the pink eye. You can also use antihistamines to counteract your body’s allergic reaction especially if the reaction is severe.

When Should You See A Doctor?
While this eye condition will heal on its own, you still need to see an eye doctor especially if the conjunctivitis is caused by chemical pollutants. Consulting with an eye doctor will also help you manage the symptoms of conjunctivitis. Your doctor will recommend medications such as antibiotics if it is caused by a bacterial infection. Moreover, your doctor will educate you on how to manage the symptoms aside from application of the medication and how to avoid spreading the disease to other people. Remember, conjunctivitis is a highly contagious disease.

Conjunctivitis is not dangerous but just merely uncomfortable. Your pink eye, if managed well, will be gone within a few days. But during this time, avoid sharing anything with anyone so that you don’t pass this condition to others.
